Concelebrated Mass of Christian Burial for
Monsignor Bob Rice
will be celebrated in
the Cathedral Church of St Francis Xavier, 17 Wakefield Street, Adelaide
on TUESDAY, October 28, 2025, commencing at 10:00 a.m.
Please note that no parking is available in the Cathedral grounds
Following Mass, the Rite of Committal will take place at the
Centennial Park Cemetery (Catholic A Section), 760 Goodwood Road, Pasadena.
The Funeral Mass will also be broadcast via livestream.

Only son of the late Ignatius and Annie Rice
Much loved brother of the late Patricia Toohey (née Rice).
Uncle of Kevin Toohey and kindred spirit of Kevin’s wife, Julie-Anne Toohey.
Dearly beloved uncle of Anne Toohey-Michelis and her spouse Mark Michelis.
Adored great uncle of Daniel Toohey, Laura Toohey, and Rhys Charles Michelis.
Dearly loved by Jan Hulme, her daughter Tammy, and family.

Loved and respected by clergy, religious and the lay faithful
of the Archdiocese of Adelaide.
Monsignor Rice was a much-loved priest in the Archdiocese, ordained July 21, 1956,
serving faithfully across many parishes including Brighton, St Peters, Glenelg,
Mount Gambier, Edwardstown, Croydon, Woodville Gardens, and St Mary’s.
His leadership extended beyond parish life, with appointments to
the Council of Sites and Architecture, Dean of the South East, Priestly Life and Ministry,
and as a member of the College of Consultors and the Council of Priests.
He earned his Doctor of Philosophy from Flinders University,
with a thesis on the life and ministry of Archbishop James Gleeson.
His intellectual contributions and pastoral generosity
were deeply appreciated by all who knew him.
A passionate golfer and devoted Adelaide Crows supporter,
Monsignor Rice will be lovingly remembered for his unwavering service
over 69 years in the Archdiocese of Adelaide.
We also acknowledge with gratitude the many
weekend supplies he generously undertook during his retirement.
He will be deeply missed by clergy, religious, and the faithful.

My dearly loved cousin Robert and I were both born in Adelaide in 1932. I farewell him with great affection and pride. Rosemary Rendell, Port Lincoln.
Monsignor Robert Rice was a very down to earth priest; he always had the time to say hello to everybody he came in contact with. I pray that he's now with our loving Lord and safely in God's loving care.
To our dear Father Bob, you are one in a million. Thank you for your service, compassion, and respect to your ministry, and for bringing our faith to many people and children in our Catholic Schools. We will miss you dearly. In God’s tender loving care. xxx ❤️ xxx xxx

I served Mass for him at Brighton in 1957 and again at Nativity Parish when he was "on supply" just one month ago - August 2025. Truly one of God's greatest who lived life in all its fullness. Great priest, intellectual and wonderful human being.
Sympathy to the family of Robert Rice from family of John David Rice.
A very kind man. Lovingly remembered from his time in Mount Gambier. He married me and buried my infant son. He is now resting in peace. Many memories remain with me.

We have beautiful memories of Mons. Rice as we travelled with him on an overseas pilgrimage to Europe in 2005 as our chaplain. Always happy to greet you with a smile and interested in what was going on in your life. He will be dearly missed. Rest in peace Bob.
